May Issue of the Export Review Presented

The Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communication presented the Export Review issue for May 2021. The Review mentions that during January-April 2021, the export of Azerbaijan amounted to 6.4 billion US dollars, including non-oil export equal to 697 million US dollars. The non-oil export increased by 146 million US dollars or 26.5 percent compared to the same period in 2020.

In January-April 2021, raw cotton (96.4 million US dollars) took first place among exported products of the non-oil sector. Gold (64.6 million US dollars) and tomatoes (42.3 million US dollars) shared second and third places. According to statistics, following in this list are virgin polypropylene (37.1 million US dollars), peeled hazelnuts (34.7 million US dollars), initial polyethylene with density lower than 0.94 (33.6 million US dollars), persimmon (31.9 million US dollars), electricity (23.2 million US dollars), etc.

In January-April 2021, the value of non-oil products exported to Turkey amounted to 216.2 million US dollars, Russia – 188.5 million US dollars, Switzerland – 68.2 million US dollars, Georgia – 53.5 million US dollars, and to the USA – 23 million US dollars.

In April 2021, exports of Azerbaijan amounted to 3.2 billion US dollars with 195.4 million US dollars in the non-oil sector. In April of this year, Russia (58.7 million US dollars) topped the list of countries exporting the most non-oil goods. Turkey was second (53.2 million US dollars) and Switzerland was third (23.3 million US dollars).

In April 2021, raw cotton (27.8 million US dollars) took first place among exported products of the non-oil sector. Gold (21.2 million US dollars) and tomatoes (21 million US dollars) shared second and third places.

During the first four months of 2021, exports of fruits and vegetables amounted to 131.5 million, cotton fiber – 97 million, aluminum and products made from it – 53 million, ferrous metals and products made from them – 31.4 million, cotton yarn – 15.2 million, chemical industry products – 13.1 million, sugar – 13.3 million, vegetable and animal fat and oils – 11.2 million, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – 5.1 million, and tea – 3 million US dollars.

The top ten companies in the ranking of non-state exporters in January-April 2021 are the following: MKT Industrial Commerce LLC, P-Agro LLC, Representation of Azerbaijan International Mining Company Limited in the Republic of Azerbaijan, Baku Steel Company LLC, Sun Food LLC, Azerbaijan Sugar Production Association LLC, Metal Trader LTD, Ram International Transportation and Trade LLC, Critical Fruit LLC, and Agrovest LLC.

The list of state-owned companies involved in export operations in the non-oil sector is headed by the SOCAR Polymer LLC and SOCAR Marketing and Economic Operations Department. Next on this list are Azeraluminium LLC, Azergold CJSC, Azercotton Agricultural and Industrial Complex LLC, Azerenergy OJSC, Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, Caspian Geo LLC,  Azeripek LLC, State Energy Agency of Nakhchivan AR.

Considered as a new generation of service exports, satellite telecommunications, and optical satellite services play an important role in diversifying service exports.

In January-April 2021, Azercosmos OJSC exported services (satellite telecommunication and optical services) worth 16.9 million US dollars to 27 countries of the world. Profit earned from the export of services amounted to 91 percent of the total profit of Azercosmos OJSC. In April 2021, Azercosmos OJSC exported services worth 6.3 million US dollars to 26 countries of the world. 

In January-April 2021, the top 5 countries where Azercosmos exported its services included the USA, the UK, France, UAE, and Pakistan. United States (5.1 million US dollars), Malaysia (3.6 million US dollars), the United Kingdom (3.3 million US dollars), France (2.8 million US dollars), and the UAE (579,000 US dollars).

The decline in the tourism sector as a result of the crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continued in the first months of this year. In January-April 2021, 162.9 thousand foreigners and stateless persons arrived in Azerbaijan from 134 countries. That is 3.3 times less than in the same period last year. Most of the visits were for a non-tourism purpose. In January-April 2021, the total cost of operations made by foreign citizens through bank cards in our country amounted to 112.2 million manats. In April 2021, this indicator was 28.3 million manats.

The Export Review also provides information on export orders submitted to the Azexport.az portal in April 2021. The 164.2 million US dollars. In April, this figure was 33 million US dollars. In April 2021, the list of the most popular exported goods included:  tomatoes, potatoes, onions, chicken, milk powder, licorice root, cottonseed oil, chicken eggs, tea, engine oil, wine, building material, confectionery, honey, apples, textiles, pomegranate juice, saffron, chickpeas, energy drink, etc. It should be mentioned that from January 2017 to April 30, 2021 (for 52 months), the value of export orders received by the portal Azexport.az from 145 countries amounted to 2 billion 359 million US dollars.

At the same time, according to the Export Review, during May 2021, the total cost of the non-oil export implemented through the One-Stop-Shop Export Support Center was 15.3 million US dollars. From 2017 to May 2021, the total amount of goods and products exported through the One-Stop-Shop Export Support Center was 553 million US dollars.
