On 8 January 2026, the official inauguration ceremony of the 240-megawatt Khizi-Absheron Wind Power Plant, constructed by ACWA Power of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was held in Baku. The project represents a significant milestone in the formation of new generation capacities within Azerbaijan’s renewable energy sector, implemented in cooperation with leading international investors.
The inauguration serves as a practical embodiment of the strategic approach to energy transformation articulated by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, during his interview with local television channels on 5 January 2026. The targets outlined in the interview-namely, the integration of 6 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity into the national power grid by 2030 and 8 gigawatts by 2032, the establishment of energy storage systems, and the expansion of grid transmission capacity to 20-40 gigawatts-necessitate the systematic implementation of projects of this scale. Within this framework, the Khizi-Absheron Wind Power Plant will play a functional role in enhancing the resilience of the national energy system and diversifying the generation portfolio. At the same time, the increasing involvement of domestic companies in the renewable energy sector may be assessed as a positive trend, reflecting the formation of a new energy market in the country, the strengthening of technological competitiveness, and the expansion of private sector participation. As noted by the President, the growth of renewable energy generation enables greater volumes of natural gas to be saved for export, underscoring the importance of the green transition not only from an environmental perspective, but also in terms of economic efficiency and energy security.
The issues raised by President Ilham Aliyev during the interview demonstrate the consistent implementation of state policy aimed at the development of renewable energy, the strengthening of the energy system, and the transformation of Azerbaijan into a regional hub for advanced technologies in the future. In this context, the President’s statement that “if we add electricity, hydrogen, and green hydrogen, our role will become even greater” reflects a strategic vision focused not only on expanding production capacity, but also on diversifying the energy value chain and fostering new technological and innovative domains. Recognizing the necessity of powering Data Centers, which constitute the backbone of modern digital infrastructure, with renewable energy sources creates a strategic foundation for translating this vision into practical outcomes. In the coming years, the operation of Data Centers based on renewable energy, the development of supercomputing and high-performance computing infrastructure, and the wide deployment of artificial intelligence technologies will create favorable conditions for positioning Azerbaijan as a regional power center not only in terms of energy resources, but also in digital services and innovation capacity. The experience of leading global technology companies operating green-powered Data Centers demonstrates that this approach enhances energy efficiency while ensuring the sustainability of the digital economy. In this regard, the initiatives put forward by the Head of State to strengthen the energy system may play a significant role in supporting digital transformation objectives and in the development of the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
In conclusion, both the commissioning of the Khizi-Absheron Wind Power Plant on 8 January and the strategic positions articulated by the President in his recent interview indicate that Azerbaijan’s long-term energy transformation is being implemented through a comprehensive and integrated approach. The alignment of renewable energy sector development with national interests, alongside the parallel advancement of technology-driven development pathways within the energy sector, will make a substantial contribution to strengthening the country’s position in the global innovation landscape, transforming energy resources into higher value-added technologies, and positioning Azerbaijan as an international exporter of digital services.
