Azerbaijan acts not only as a participant but also as a strategic partner in Europe’s “Global Gateway” initiative

Azerbaijan has a favorable geographical position that enables it to serve as a bridge between Central Asia and Europe. Large-scale transport and infrastructure projects implemented over many years have further expanded the country’s strategic potential. Having become one of Eurasia’s leading transport and transit hubs, Azerbaijan today plays an important role in Europe’s “Global Gateway” initiative.

Commenting on the issue, Agil Asadov, Head of Department at the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communication (CAERC), noted that the “Global Gateway” project is a strategic initiative of the European Union aimed at building sustainable, secure, and reliable infrastructure connections worldwide. In 2021, the European Commission and the EU High Representative launched the “Global Gateway” initiative as a new European strategy designed to strengthen smart, clean, and secure connections in the digital, energy, and transport sectors, while also reinforcing healthcare, education, and research systems globally. Since then, Team Europe has mobilized more than 306 billion euros in investments to support sustainable, high-quality projects that respond to the needs of partner countries and deliver long-term benefits to local communities.

With its advantageous geographical location, political stability, and openness to international cooperation, the Republic of Azerbaijan stands out as one of the key partners in this initiative.

Statements made by the Head of State at the Davos Economic Forum - “Unfortunately, we do not see significant investment from Europe in either fossil fuels or renewable energy… There is no European company showing interest in investing… Frankly speaking, we do not see strong interest from European companies in investment, even though Europe is the main destination for our natural gas” - reflect Europe’s relatively limited investment activity in Azerbaijan.

Nevertheless, as emphasized by the President of Azerbaijan, “Azerbaijan is the only reliable, secure, and goodwill-oriented destination country for Europe in establishing connectivity with Central Asia.”

Positioned at the crossroads of the East-West and North-South transport corridors, Azerbaijan serves as a vital bridge between Europe and Asia. In particular, the Middle Corridor - the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route - has emerged as an important alternative route for Europe’s access to Asian markets. The development of this corridor not only expands Europe’s trade and logistics capabilities but also strengthens economic cooperation across the region.

Energy cooperation is another key pillar of the “Global Gateway” initiative. Azerbaijan has long been recognized as a reliable energy partner for Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor plays a strategic role in ensuring Europe’s energy security. At the same time, renewable energy projects further enhance Azerbaijan’s contribution to Europe’s green energy agenda.

One of the crucial factors shaping Azerbaijan’s role within the “Global Gateway” framework is the strengthening of digital connectivity. The development of digital infrastructure, fiber-optic cable projects, and the facilitation of interregional data flows enable the creation of a digital bridge between Europe and Asia. As a result, Azerbaijan’s capacity to enhance EU land and maritime links with Central Asia, increase trade volumes, and strengthen regional cooperation within the “Global Gateway” framework will continue to grow.

Agil Asadov emphasized that Azerbaijan remains committed to the core principles of the “Global Gateway” initiative - sustainability, transparency, and long-term development. Initiatives implemented within this framework contribute to strengthening the country’s economic potential, improving the investment climate, and reinforcing regional stability. Azerbaijan therefore acts not merely as a participant but as a strategic partner in Europe’s “Global Gateway” initiative. This partnership is expected to elevate EU-Azerbaijan relations to a new level, deepen regional integration, and stimulate the development of mutually beneficial cooperation on a global scale.
