During his speech at the 8th Congress of the New Azerbaijan Party, President Ilham Aliyev emphasized Azerbaijan's expanding role in energy security, stating: "...rich in energy resources, Azerbaijan is turning into a very serious geopolitical and security factor today."
Commenting on Azerbaijan's achievements in the sphere of energy security, Ramil Huseyn, Deputy Executive Director of the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communication (CAERC), stated that reinforcing the resilience of energy security constitutes one of the key directions for ensuring long-term economic security in both global and regional contexts. According to him, energy security plays a vital role not only in safeguarding economic security, but also serves to strengthen national security. Precisely for this reason, scaling up the use of renewable energy sources alongside conventional energy resources is of paramount importance in ensuring Azerbaijan's energy security.
Azerbaijan is among the countries that have sufficiently diversified their energy sources in terms of ensuring energy security. Particularly in recent years, focus has intensified on utilizing solar and wind energy potential, and significant steps have been taken toward attracting foreign investors to this sector. Through measures aimed at realizing its green energy potential, Azerbaijan not only enhances its energy security, but also takes substantial steps from the perspective of national security. According to estimates, the technical potential of Azerbaijan's onshore and offshore renewable energy sources—solar and wind power—exceeds 292 GW. Phased realization of this potential, leading to increased green energy production and its future export, can expand Azerbaijan's capability to contribute to the energy security of both neighboring countries and Europe. Azerbaijan currently exports natural gas to 16 countries, 10 of which are member states of the European Union. As a result of steps taken toward implementing the "Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor" project, the issue of exporting green electricity to European nations is progressing from concept to execution.
Ramil Huseyn noted that Azerbaijan currently plays a critical role in the energy security of numerous countries through oil and gas exports. In his view, advancing green energy projects is vital for Azerbaijan to sustain its status as an energy-exporting nation in the future. By efficiently harnessing the potential of onshore and offshore renewable energy sources, the country further fortifies both its energy and economic security for the period ahead.
